Common Ground
If you can believe the news, human interaction in business,
politics, and personal relationships seems to be finding less and
less common ground to agree upon and more irreconcilable issues to
contest. It seems the permission we give ourselves to disagree,
and we all have our opinions, is encroaching into decision
management. Traditionally, we tended to air our differences, make
a decision that seemed to be best for all and forged
onward. Lately, there seems to be an unspoken permission making it
acceptable to spoil the very fabric of human connection by refusing
to accept any compromise. While airing issues and voicing
disagreement is healthy, allowing the many facets of an issue to be
explored, societies, businesses and relationships must grow their
common ground, not diminish it, if they are to survive and
prosper. An unwillingness to compromise -- to find this mutually
acceptable solution -- chips away at the common ground, and leads
to greater discord, rancor while escalating the potential for
conflict.
