  How Boomers are Retreading Retirement

Most of my work in succession over the past 30 years has had to do with helping leaders move on from businesses and jobs they loved, making their transitions profitably and with some measure of control. Virtually all of them went into retirement, giving back to the community, moving closer to their families, taking up a sport they loved, traveling near and far, or just taking a well-earned rest. Things are changing.

Today, more and more of the leaders I speak with -- my potential clients -- are asking new questions and thinking about new challenges. They don't want to retire; they want to retread themselves for another 40,000 miles. They want to do something new. Climb another mountain. Start fresh. This renewed (rediscovered) energy is very much a Boomer thing. And just as study after study talks about how Boomers are redefining retirement so it is that I see them us (I'm a Boomer, too) redefining entrepreneurship.

Look in the mirror. Ask yourself, "Is it time to move on?" " Is there another mountain I want to climb?" "Is there another company I want to start?" "Is there a new passion I must pursue?" When you see it, you'll be smiling and you'll know what to do.
